Day 27, to Thurso

I could hear the wind howling around the hostel as soon as I woke, and it seemed alarmingly blustery. Of course, we were close to the sea. I now met with Jen Holden, who is about my age, and also a cyclist (although on mountain bikes, and she’s also a climber.) She moved from Lancashire to live here whilst in her seventies – and instantly began to learn Gaelic. I liked her immediately for her enthusiasm.

Bettyhill (I didn’t stay here though!)

Onwards from Bettyhill the road plunged up and down endlessly as far as Melvich. Melvich is noted is the Sustrans guide for its hilliness, and I can endorse that. I was often rewarded with ravishingly beautiful views of seascapes and sandy beaches which looked very enticing. All were completely deserted.

I met up with Paul and we celebrated our last picnic lunch on this ride with our usual cans of sardines in tomato sauce – but they’re so tasty, and I never tire of them.

Arriving in Thurso, the most northern town on the island of Great Britain we tracked down our hostel and noticed that we had a famously Scottish attraction opposite! A lovely fish and chip shop where you could get haggis and deep fried Mars bars.

Tomorrow is the last day, and I’m going to miss my life on the road.

Stats

42.5 miles (925.61 miles total), 2,925ft ascent, 2,950ft descent

  6. What an amazing achievement, Gina. You are such an inspiration. Well done. My father did LEJOG twice – once at 65 and again at 72. Our son has cycled it too so I’m the missing generation! You’ve given me hope. I’m 71. I’ve just got to convince my husband 🙃
    Anyway, huge CONGRATULATIONS 🎊 👏 💐 🥳
