Day 0

My pre-stage today was a ride to the train station, to catch a Chiltern line train to my son’s house. He’s going to drive me all the way to the start, God bless him.

Brr! How cold and wintry – not quite what I envisaged. I thought it would be warm and balmy as I rode along – but it seems that the only barmy thing is me.

To make matters worse, they have shrunk the available bike space in my beloved Chiltern train, so my bike neatly blocked any poor passenger trying to get down the carriage.

Bicester North welcomed me with a broken lift, so I needed assistance from the helpful staff to haul my bicycle over the footbridge.

I’m feeling really excited about my ride – I want to start now. I don’t know if I’ll make it but I want to get on and have a bash at this challenge. Time I just did it.

My biggest fear is a climate event – flooding, winds and so forth – that might prevent me from completing the ride.

I’m aiming to get to Lands End for a 1PM start tomorrow (just a short day) if you feel like waving me off!

Best moment – what a happy surprise when I saw a huge box of home made toffee flapjacks awaiting me at my son’s house (rocket fuel!)
